At the end of 2017, the Arctic was shrouded in cold currents and North America experienced severe cold weather, while temperatures even reached minus 50 degree Celsius in cities located in central Canada. However, Australia, which is situated in the southern hemisphere, was hit by heat waves, while Sydney recorded the highest temperature since 1990 at 47.3 degrees Celsius. In the mid-2017, temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius were observed in India and Pakistan. All these phenomena show that climate changes and Earth’s extremes continue to deteriorate.

Not only that we are threatened by climate changes on land, but also by worsening pollution in the vast ocean around us due to large amount of garbage. According to statistics provided by the Taiwan International Coastal Cleanup, the top five marine trashes are paper and plastic bags, straws, bottle caps, beverage bottles and disposable tableware. Divers also found polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles in areas of sea surrounding Peace Island, Keelung and Siao Liouciou in Taiwan, which have seriously affected the marine ecology and food chains.

As the Earth is facing an immediate environmental crisis, everyone is responsible for protecting the environment in which we live. Corporations, which are the major designers and manufacturers of consumer goods, are even more duty-bound and obliged to develop green materials, utilize green energy and adopt green processes to produce green products, so that consumers can recycle and reuse, thus ultimately forming a green and circular economic ecosystem.

As the leading and largest aluminium manufacturer in Taiwan, CSAC’s mission is to provide clients with high cost-performance ratio, safe and environmental friendly products, and to achieve business and environmental sustainability. We have also been fulfilling corporate social responsibility, and are particularly committed to establishing a green and circular economy. With all the hard work put in by all our colleagues, the summary of our promotion results in 2017 are described as follows:

Green Materials

Aluminium is one of the green materials and is the most abundant metal in the earth’s crust. It has some outstanding characteristics, including lightweight, high ductility and infinitely recyclable. CSAC has always been utilizing the characteristics of aluminium to develop green products for various industrial and domestic applications, and has applied its good characteristics to semiconductor equipment chambers, 7075 bicycle gear plates, auto-body plate, beverage can bodies, 3C electrical appliances, aluminium foil for batteries and pharmaceutical packaging, etc., and fully supports the development of eco-friendly vehicles and the application of aluminium packaging materials. Being regarded as the most eco-friendly packaging material with the highest value of recycling (where aluminium recycling rate in Taiwan exceeds 99%), aluminium cans are able to replace plastic containers such as PET bottles. In view of the hazardous plastic wastes, our company has established an aluminium promotion team with downstream can manufacturers, and is ready to collaborate with the CSC Group Education Foundation to promote the use of green products from elementary schools and advocate the idea of using green products from young, thereby comprehensively promoting the use of aluminium cans. Not only do we practice the responsibility of protecting the environment, but also we are able to expand the sale of our products, thereby achieving a win-win situation between corporate social responsibility and profitability.

Green Energy

Concerning fuel consumption, to implement environmental protection policies, we have stopped using heavy oil as fuel and replaced it with natural gas since 2015, which has significantly reduced pollutant emissions. In terms of electricity consumption, in line with the government’s nuclear-free homeland policy in 2016, CSC Group has been developing wind power and solar power at full speed. In 2017, we have completed the installation of a solar power system with an electricity generation capacity of 2,000 kW. In the future, we will continue to install additional devices. Concerning water consumption, we have signed an agreement on the use of recycled water along Fengshan River in 2015, and are expected to start using recycled water after the project completes in 2018. As to raw materials, we continue to use recycled aluminium, and expand the purchase of aluminium ingots produced by using hydropower, thereby promoting the idea of using clean energy within the supply chain.

Green Processes

We adhere to energy conservation and carbon dioxide reduction policies by implementing improvement measures including continuously simplifying processes, improving process efficiency and using energy-efficient equipment. In the process, we have completed optimizing five production processes, which has increased overall equipment effectiveness by 5.3%, and have added a No. 3 heating furnace with low fuel consumption burners. In terms of electricity conservation results, we have lowered electricity consumption by 1.3% in 2017, thereby exceeding the 1.0% target set by the government for two consecutive years. With respect to heat consumption, the No. 3 furnace began operation in 2017, which does not only reduce fuel consumption during the preheating process, but also gradually exhibits the effect of combining preheating and homogenization processes, thereby reducing repetitive process heating.

As climate change affects everyone and ocean pollution is vividly in sight, prompt actions have to be taken; hence, CSAC is implementing environmental protection policies seriously. We are not only committed to green manufacturing, but are also fully promoting the use of green products such as aluminium cans, in hopes of reducing ocean pollution due to plastic wastes. We hope that people who share the same aspirations will join hands to create a sustainable Earth.
